This is a GREAT!  When a friend had sent me the link to "40 signs that you're a lousy PHP coder"... I laughed at the same points you brought up.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I'm an advocate for making things as readable as possible, especially in PHP since it can get ridiculous quick.
